United Methodist Women (UMW)

United Methodist Women is the largest organization in the world of women organized for mission.  Members focus on the areas of spiritual growth, social action, nurturing our membership, and mission outreach.  It takes every member of the local units of our Conference working together to continue our heritage as an organization rooted in mission.

United Methodist Women is a community of women with a special PURPOSE.  That PURPOSE is:

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

The PURPOSE statement refers specifically to “the organized unit of United Methodist Women.”  It is no coincidence, then, that organization is right up front.  Good organization is part of the heritage of women who have organized for mission.

Responding to God’s grace, members have given their financial gifts to improve the quality of life for women, children, and youth.  In 2007, the Western North Carolina Conference of United Methodist Women again exceeded the million dollar mark in their giving of $ 1, 093,853.22.  For the seventh consecutive year, the Western North Carolina Conference is the NUMBER ONE Conference in financial giving.

There are currently 3 active United Methodist Woman Interest Groups at Park Street.  Each fulfills the purpose of what being a United Methodist Woman is about:

Chrismon Group
Meeting Date/Time                                 1st Tuesday of the month – Noon

Chrismons are Christmas tree decorations, all hand-made, some very intricate, depicting all the religious symbols of the church.  The Chrismon Group repairs damaged chrismons and makes new chirsmons each year for our church Christmas Trees.  We currently have two pre-lit Christmas trees.  One is placed in the Sanctuary and is lit the first Sunday in Advent.  The second tree resides in our Family Life Center for all to enjoy throughout the holiday season.

Young United Methodist Women
Meeting Date/Time                                 3rd Sunday of the month – 5:00 PM

The YUMW is a community of women whose purpose is to know God; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.  Two of our mission projects in which the YUMW participate are an annual flea market held in the spring, and a bazaar held in the fall. Money raised during these events goes to various mission projects and charities.

Volunteer Interest Group
Meeting Date/Time                                 1st Monday of the month – 7:00 PM

The Volunteer Interest Group is the largest of the 3 interest groups.  In fact, some of its members were members when the group originally started in 1968.  Their meetings consist of prayer and praise, devotions, recognition of home members and they complete a mission project each month.  This group strives to meet needs when they arise either inside the church or throughout the community.

If you are not already a member of one of these groups of women, we’d love to have you join us!

Upcoming events the United Methodist Women will be sponsoring include our annual Bazaar on November 22 from 8-12 in our Family Life Center.  We will be having a Christmas Tea this year also in our Family Life Center on December 7.  You will be hearing more about both events in the coming months so mark the dates on your calendars!

As you can see, whether we are worshiping together, participating in hands-on mission projects, writing letters to our legislators, or raising funds to support mission projects all around the world, United Methodist Women are answering God’s call to go into the world and spread the love of Christ.  Yes, we are women organized for mission!
